POLICE SUPERVISION: LEADING WITH EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AT ALL LEVELS

Hosted by the New England HIDTA
and
BBS Narcotics Enforcement Training & Consulting, LLC

“It’s our world and you’re passing through.” This can be the attitude of many senior officers assigned to supervisors, especially those working within a specialized team. A law enforcement supervisor, and the officers within a police team, must know, or be willing to learn, how to work together to perform effectively and consistently at a high level. Countless dynamics may impact the team’s ability to maintain this heightened level of performance, which may include the following: navigating a variety of personalities, understanding the mission of a specialized unit, working with different levels of expertise and experience between the team supervisor and team members. This course will…

  • Examine the roles of a supervisor and the officers assigned to a police team
  • Provide foundational knowledge of group dynamics
  • Give ways for supervisors to navigate different personality types within a team
  • Help supervisors learn ways to traverse everyday ethical, operational, and administrative dilemmas
  • Explore effective methods for supervisors to work with different echelon levels above/below them

This course is truly for anyone supervising a team at any level, or officers planning to be supervisors. The Instructors for the class will be Gerard Bartlett and Brian Sallee.

Gerard is a retired Commander from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD). Gerard was with APD for 20 years, where he worked as a Patrolman, Field Training Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Commander. Supervising the following sworn/civilian teams at some level helped him gain diverse leadership experiences: patrol, narcotics, tactical, crisis intervention, transit safety, prisoner transport, air support, open space, and horse mounted. Gerard is a graduate of Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Counseling and is currently a doctoral student.

Brian Sallee is a retired Detective from the APD. Brian was a police officer for approximately 40 years. He was a narcotics detective for over 31 years and ran the APD Meth Unit for 14 years. Brian served on the police union board and negotiated several contracts. He was involved in writing policies for APD and other departments. Brian has a Master’s in Criminal Justice and has co-authored two books and numerous articles.
